Faulty and aging electrical wiring is one of the leading causes of house fires in the UK. The problem is that unlike a dripping tap or a broken window, wiring problems are usually hidden behind walls and ceilings — out of sight and easy to ignore. Here are seven warning signs that your home may need attention.

1. Your Home Is More Than 25–30 Years Old and Has Never Been Rewired

Modern electrical standards have changed significantly over the past few decades. Wiring installed before the mid-1990s is increasingly likely to fall short of current safety requirements — not necessarily because it's about to fail, but because the materials, methods and protection levels used then differ from what's considered safe today.

If your home has never had a rewire, or if you don't know when it was last done, it's worth having an EICR carried out to establish its current condition.

2. You Have Round-Pin Sockets or Rubber/Fabric-Covered Cables

Round-pin sockets and old rubber or fabric-sheathed wiring are clear indicators of very old electrical installations — often pre-1970s. This type of wiring is now extremely old and is likely to have degraded significantly. It should be assessed and almost certainly replaced.

Round-pin sockets also indicate the absence of modern protective devices such as RCDs (residual current devices), which are a critical safety component in all modern installations.

3. Frequently Tripping Circuit Breakers

If a circuit breaker trips occasionally when you overload a circuit, that's the system working as intended. But if breakers are tripping frequently without an obvious cause, or if the same breaker keeps tripping, there's likely a fault somewhere in the circuit that needs to be investigated properly.

Never repeatedly reset a tripping breaker and simply carry on — it's tripping for a reason. Contact a qualified electrician to diagnose and fix the underlying issue.

4. Burning Smell or Scorch Marks Around Sockets or Switches

A burning smell from a socket, switch or light fitting — or visible discolouration or scorch marks around them — is a serious warning sign. It indicates heat is being generated somewhere in the circuit, possibly due to a loose connection, overheating cables or a failing component.

If you notice this, stop using the affected outlet and contact an electrician immediately. Don't wait.

5. Flickering or Dimming Lights

Occasional flickering when you switch a high-draw appliance on can be normal. But persistent flickering, dimming that occurs without obvious cause, or lights that dim when you use another circuit are signs of voltage fluctuations or wiring problems that need investigating.

6. An Old-Style Fuse Box With Rewirable Fuses

If your consumer unit (fuse board) contains rewirable fuses — where you replace a length of fuse wire when a circuit overloads — rather than modern circuit breakers and RCDs, it's significantly out of date. Modern regulations require consumer units to have RCD protection on all circuits, which provides a critical layer of protection against electric shock and fire.

A consumer unit upgrade is a relatively straightforward job and will substantially improve the safety of your home's electrical installation. Find out more about our domestic electrical services.

7. You're Planning Significant Building Work or an Extension

If you're having an extension built, a loft conversion, or a major renovation, it's an ideal opportunity to have the existing electrical installation assessed and, if necessary, upgraded. Building work of this scale often requires new circuits and additional load, and it's far easier and more cost-effective to bring wiring up to standard at this stage than to return to it later.

What to Do If You're Concerned

If you've recognised any of the signs above, the first step is to have an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) carried out. This will give you a professional, objective assessment of your wiring's current condition and highlight anything that needs immediate attention.

We carry out EICRs and full rewires for homes across Telford, Shrewsbury and the wider Shropshire area. Get in touch for a free, no-obligation quote.
